Trident Maritime Trauma Care course now endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons against the D13 Police Firearms Medical Training Standard

The Trident Maritime Trauma Care (TMTC) course has now been mapped by the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh against the D13 curriculum and meets the learner requirements for the D13 Specialist Police Firearms Training curriculum. D13 was the specific course advised to the Security in Complex Environments Group (SCEG) by the preeminent Royal College of Surgeons back in November 2012.

The course contains the following subject matter:

  • Principles of trauma managment and CABC

  • Medicine in the maritime environment

  • Trauma and patient assessment

  • Dealing with catastrophic haemorrhage

  • Airway management, breathing and drowning.

  • Circulation and burns

  • Disability and environment

  • Muslo-Skeletal Injuries

  • Head Injury, spinal and abdominal trauma

  • Prolonged patient care

  • Basic and Intermediate Life Support

  • Use of the Automatic External Defibrillator

  • Emergency Casualty reporting, preparation for transfer and evacuation

  • Medical trauma equipment

  • Practical moulage 'live' exercises on a commerical vessel.

To aim of the TMTC course is to provide practical first response trauma care training to prepare a maritime professional to competently manage a range of life-threatening medical emergencies that could be suffered as a result of an armed engagement on the high seas. The course provides the knowledge and skills required to enable an experienced security professional to perform non-invasive procedures to preserve the life of a casualty for as long as practicable, in the prevailing conditions, using the limited resources available.

This Unviersity-accredtited course offers students a University level 4 Certificate in Trauma Care and 30 academic credits at level 4. No other training provider offers such a comprehensive trauma training course, bespoke to the maritime industry, but with the D13 (Specialist) compliance, offers a 'land-based' recognised qualification.
